Roofing Membrane, Single Ply Roofing Repairs

We have proven roof repairs and sealing materials for all types of single-ply roofing membranes and similar materials including, EPDM roofing membranes (rubber roofs), Hypalon roofing membranes, PVC roofing membranes and TPO roofing membranes.

Single ply roofing membranes are durable long-lasting roofing used for roofing in homes, RV's,  industrial and commercial roofs constructions. Nevertheless, like all roofing, over the years the sun has proven to have a negative effect all types of single ply roofing materials. These aging effects can cause  "chalking", loss of some of the top layer of protection, embrittlement and shrinkage. In turn, this can cause seams to pull apart and split. The aged conditions can also make it difficult to re-seal seams and roof penetrations, or install new equipment with reliable waterproofing. We have solutions for all of these situations.

EPDM ROOFING REPAIRS

EPDM roofing membrane repairs can be made by several methods, depending on the repair needed:

EPDM roofing membrane (rubber roofing) is a high performance synthetic rubber roofing made from ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber together with additives. EPDM roofing has been used for over 40 years, with more than 500,000 warranted roof installations and more than 20 billion square feet. Annually, EPDM accounts for over 1 billion square feet of new roof coverings in the United States, and is the most frequently used roofing material in the marketplace. EPDM roofing is known for its ease of application, superior flexibility, proven hail resistance, high resistance to ozone and ultra-violet light, abrasion resistance, high resistance to wind damage, superior resistance to extreme heat and low temperature flexibility.

Typically EPDM roofing membrane are adhered or mechanically fastened. Most new roofs are 100% adhered. After years of service, some chalking and loss of some of the surface layer is common. EPDM roofing is popular on RV's / Motor homes, commercial, industrial, residential patios, rooftop gardens, pond lines, and institutional applications Best Materials provides EPDM membrane materials which can be purchased by the foot and related accessories. Our EPDM roofing is Energy Star rated, white color, in a thickness of 60 mils (1.52) and in convenient 10 foot wide rolls.

HYPALON ROOFING REPAIRS

HYPALON roofing membrane repairs can be made by several methods, depending on the type of repair needed:

  • Using M1 sealant together with TPO primer (around irregular surfaces and penetrations).
  • Scoring surface with a kitchen scrubber, clean with Eternaclean and sealing with Eternabond RoofSeal roof repair tape (easy and suitable for most repairs). If very cold, warm the repair area after application with a hot-air gun (or heavy duty hair dryer) and roll-in product aggressively while heating.

Hypalon is a synthetic rubber, sometimes called CSPE, is noted for its natural resistance to chemicals, extreme temperatures and ultra-violet light. Typically Hypalon roofing membrane is reinforced and is hot-air weldable. Most Hypalon roofing materials are based on DuPont Hypalon®, chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE) synthetic rubber. In its initial, manufactured form, Hypalon roofing membrane is thermoplastic in nature, which allows it to be hot-air welded. After installation and exposure to the environment, the membrane's individual polymer components cross link forming a highly stable, synthetic rubber material. Once cured to its ultimate strength, Hypalon shows little change in flexibility and provides good resistance to a broad range of chemicals. After years of service, substantial chalking of the surface occurs and the ability to weld again is greatly diminished. Hypalon is inherently fire resistant. Hypalon roofing is used for commercial, industrial and institutional applications, especially where strong chemical resistance is required and where long term chalking of the surface is not a problem. The material is generally sold in white color in thicknesses of 45 mil (1.14 mm) and 60 mil (1.52) thickness in 6 to 7 foot wide rolls.

PVC ROOFING REPAIRS

PVC roofing membrane repairs can be made by several methods, depending on the type of repair needed:

  • Scoring surface with a kitchen scrubber and seal using M1 sealant.
  • Scoring surface with a kitchen scrubber, clean lightly with Eternaclean, and sealing with Eternabond RoofSeal roof repair tape. In cold weather (less than 45F) preheat / warm Eternabond to room temperature. If very cold, warm the repair area after application with a hot-air gun (or heavy duty hair dryer) and roll-in product aggressively while heating.

PVC roofing membrane generally contain a high molecular weight, solids phase flexibility agent that will not migrate from the sheet and gives good physical properties, appearance and color after installation and years of exposure to the elements. PVC membrane is used on new and re-roofing applications. PVC has some history of embrittling over time. The membrane is sold in standard thickness of 45, 50, 60 and 80-mils in rolls that are typically 6 to 7 feet wide X 100-feet long. One advantage of PVC membrane is that it remains hot-air weld-able for many years. If new equipment is later added to the roof or other alterations are made, the PVC membrane can frequently be cut, repaired and re-welded.

TPO ROOFING REPAIRS

TPO roofing membrane repairs can be made by several methods, depending on the type of repair needed:

  • Scoring surface with a kitchen scrubber, priming with TPO primer and using M1 sealant.
  • Scoring surface with a kitchen scrubber, clean with Eternaclean, and sealing with Eternabond RoofSeal roof repair tape. In cold weather (less than 45F) preheat / warm Eternabond to room temperature. If very cold, warm the repair area after application with a hot-air gun (or heavy duty hair dryer) and roll-in product aggressively while heating.

TPO Roofing Membrane is a popular reinforced thermoplastic polyolefin. It is formulated from a proprietary compound of ethylene propylene rubber and polypropylene. TPO roofing is an environmentally friendly roofing material that provides good weatherability, fire and chemical resistance. The seams and details TPO are hot-air welded. TPO roofing membrane is thermoplastic in nature, which allows it to be hot-air welded. TPO shows little change in after weathering and provides good resistance to a broad range of chemicals. TPO roofing is used for large commercial, industrial and institutional applications. The material is generally available in white color and can be specially ordered in other colors. Rolls are sold in thicknesses of 45 mil, 60 mil and 80 mils in 3 to 12 foot wide rolls.
